Bob Mould describes “Patch the Sky” as his “darkest” and “catchiest” album, and listeners will soon be enveloped in its sounds and stories when it’s released March 25 on Merge Records.
His last two albums, "Silver Age" (2012) and "Beauty & Ruin" (2014), were exemplary efforts that, as always, dug into his and our emotional landscapes. It's a catharsis to the fullest degree.
And judging from the first single off the new one, "Voices in My Head" (see video below), this record should have our minds twisting and turning again. It's the type of music we need to push us along the way through our lives. It's look-in-the-mirror and make-it-happen music.
In a statement on the Merge records website, Mould said that about a year ago, "I withdrew from everyday life. I wrote alone for six months. I love people, but I needed my solitude. The search for my own truth kept me alive. These songs are my salvation."
He added that his hard emotional times — more death, relationships ending, life getting shorter -— are within the songs.
"Just listen and see if you can fit yourself into my stories. The words make you remember. The music makes you forget," he said.
