Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum. (All Cat Rose photos)

It's been a while since Cat and I last saw Soul Asylum deliver a solid set of raucous and righteous tunes in the live setting.
They're a band that's always stuck in our minds somewhere and usually results in a nod of the head and a mischievous grin. They're a band that evokes sparkling and sometimes beer-soaked memories of days gone by. The stellar songs also have a foothold (although it appears slightly woozy at times) in the present and attempt to guide you along life's rickety path.
So, we mentally turned back the clock to 1992 when we witnessed Soul Asylum rip it up alongside The Lemonheads and The Jayhawks at the Warfield in San Francisco.
A few moments into Soul Asylum's opening number, I partially bent downward and bobbed my head in approval -- and then swung back up when the song fully kicked in and proceeded to splash heaps of my drink into the air. I remember thinking that there will always be more beer, but let's go full tilt with Soul Asylum at this moment. Cat and I smiled at each other and kept fucking rocking.
On March 14 of this year at the Tulalip Casino in Washington, we got on board with Soul Asylum again and dug what the band blasted forth with standout tracks from many of their releases.
The Dave Pirner-led unit kicked things off with the always reliable "Somebody to Shove" and followed up with the crackling "Shut Down," "Trial By Fire," "Misery" and "Only Thing I'm Missing" before launching into the sterling "Spinnin'." My head was banging, but none of my drink was lost this time out.
Throughout the 17-song set that was powered by vocalist/rhythm guitarist Pirner along with lead guitarist Ryan Smith, bassist Jeremy Tappero and drummer Michael Bland, we also got "Black Gold," "Runaway Train," "Closer to the Stars" and the closer "Just Like Anyone." They burst into the pummeling "April Fool" for the encore that had everyone in stoked mode.
Here are some of Cat's photos from our casino night:
